Why Do Lab Grown Diamonds Cost So Much Less in India? A Plain-English Guide

Walk into any traditional jewellery store in India and ask about a one-carat mined diamond solitaire. Then go online, look up the same specification in a lab-grown version, and watch your brain try to reconcile the numbers. The price difference often 60 to 80 percent is the kind of gap that makes people suspicious. Because we've been taught, somewhere along the way, that diamonds are expensive by nature. That the cost is built into what they are.

It isn't. The cost is built into how they're sourced, processed, imported, and marketed. And once you understand that supply chain properly, the lab-grown price doesn't look like a discount. The mined diamond price starts to look like a premium you were never really getting value from.

Let's work through this properly.

The Mined Diamond Supply Chain Is Remarkably Long

A mined diamond travels an extraordinary distance literally and economically before it reaches a jewellery box. Start at the beginning: open-pit or underground mining operations in South Africa, Botswana, Russia, Canada, or Australia. These are industrial operations requiring heavy machinery, blasting, site rehabilitation, environmental compliance, and thousands of workers. The energy cost alone to extract one rough diamond carat runs into the hundreds of dollars.

From the mine, rough stones move to sorting facilities, then to rough diamond brokers and dealers. Historically, De Beers controlled much of this distribution through their "sight holder" system, releasing stones to a small number of approved buyers ten times a year in predefined lots. Even now, with De Beers' grip loosened somewhat, the rough market is dominated by a handful of major players who set pricing.

Those rough stones then travel usually to Surat, actually for cutting and polishing. India cuts and polishes roughly 90 percent of the world's diamonds. After polishing, the stones are graded by certification labs, then sold through wholesale networks, then to manufacturers, then to regional distributors, then to retail jewellers, each step adding a margin.

By the time a one-carat VS1 G-colour round brilliant lands in a Mumbai showroom, it has passed through six to eight commercial hands. Each added somewhere between 10 and 30 percent to the price. The retailer adds their own markup on top of that sometimes 50 to 100 percent in a traditional bricks-and-mortar setting.

And then there are Indian import duties. Mined diamonds attract a customs duty of around 7.5 percent when brought into India as polished stones, plus GST on top. For a stone that already costs ₹3–4 lakh at the wholesale level, that adds tens of thousands of rupees before the retailer has even touched it.

What Actually Happens in a Lab

A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. Same carbon structure, same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), same refractive index, same thermal conductivity. A gemologist with a loupe cannot tell the difference. Even specialised equipment needs to look for very specific growth patterns to distinguish one from the other.

The two main production methods are Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). In CVD, a thin diamond seed is placed in a chamber, carbon-rich gas is introduced, and a microwave beam breaks the gas down, causing carbon atoms to precipitate onto the seed layer by layer. HPHT mimics the high-pressure environment deep in the Earth's mantle, using a press to crystallise carbon around a seed. Both methods produce genuine diamond not simulant, not substitute.

The process takes weeks rather than billions of years, but the result is the same material.

Here's where the economics diverge sharply from mined diamonds. No mining operation. No extraction machinery. No site rehabilitation. No rough diamond brokers. The supply chain compresses from six to eight steps down to two or three: grow, cut and polish, set, sell.
