How to Buy an Engagement Ring Without Knowing Their Ring Size
You do not need her exact ring size to buy the ring. You need a reasonable estimate and a design that can be altered later. That second half is what most buyers get wrong. A size that is one or two numbers off is a quick job at the workshop. A ring built in a way that cannot be resized is a remake.
So before you measure anything, understand which rings forgive a wrong guess.
Your design decides how much room you have to be wrong
Resizing happens on the shank, the band that wraps the finger. A jeweller cuts it, adds or removes metal, then re-solders and polishes. Whatever sits on that band decides whether the cut is possible.
A plain or tapered shank has a clean, stone-free stretch at the back, so it takes the cut easily. A half-eternity band keeps that rear section free. A full eternity band carries stones all the way around, so there is nothing to cut without disturbing the setting and the ring must be remade. Channel-set bands sit in between, because the metal walls holding the stones cannot be shortened.
The setting around the centre stone barely matters here. A bezel-set ring wraps metal around the diamond, not the finger, so a bezel solitaire on a plain band resizes as easily as a prong one. Our guide on prong versus bezel settings covers that choice.
| Ring design | Typical resizing headroom | Best move if you are unsure of the size |
|---|---|---|
| Solitaire on a plain or tapered shank | Usually about two sizes either way | Safest choice for a surprise proposal |
| Bezel-set centre stone, plain band | Similar to a plain-shank solitaire | Good for active hands and a low profile |
| Halo with a smooth lower shank | Usually one to two sizes | Confirm the pavé stops before the base |
| Half-eternity or pavé shank | Limited to the plain rear section | Ask how far the stones travel down the band |
| Full eternity band | Not resizable, needs remaking | Keep it for the anniversary, not the proposal |
| Wide or channel-set band | Restricted, and fits tighter than it measures | Order roughly a quarter to half size up |
How to work out their size without asking
These methods are not equal. Use the highest one available to you.
Borrow a ring she already wears. This is the only method that gives you a real measurement. Take a ring from the correct finger, ideally the left ring finger, and have it measured on a mandrel. Rings worn on the index or middle finger read one to two sizes too large.
Measure the borrowed ring, not her finger. Mark its inside diameter on paper, or press it into a bar of soap and photograph the impression beside a ruler. If you wrap anything, use a paper strip rather than thread, because thread stretches and reads too small. Compare your reading against our ring size chart.
Recruit the one person she tells everything to. A sister, mother or closest friend can ask directly without raising suspicion, or compare a shared ring against her own hand.
Trace her hand while she sleeps. Treat this as direction only. Skin compresses and fingers are at their most swollen at night, so traces land within one to two sizes at best.
Use an average only as a last resort. Women’s engagement rings in India commonly fall around India 11 to 14, and men’s bands around India 19 to 22. That is a stocking range, not her size, so pair it with a resizable design.
The variables that quietly ruin a good measurement
Knuckle size versus base size. If her knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of the finger, the ring has to clear the knuckle and then sits loose below it. Going up a full size makes the spinning worse. The fix is a fitted solution such as sizing beads or a small inner shim, added after she has the ring.
Heat and humidity. Fingers swell through an Indian summer, during monsoon humidity and late in the evening. A half-size swing across a single day is normal, which is why one measurement taken at 11pm in June is not a reliable number.
Hand and band width. The dominant hand usually runs slightly larger, and a wide band contacts more skin so it feels tighter than its stated size.
India sizing versus US sizing, where wrong orders actually happen
Two systems describe the same finger, and “size 6” means different rings in each. On our chart, India 12 is 52.5mm inside circumference, or US 6¼. India 13 is 53.8mm, or US 6¾. One full US size is roughly 2.5mm of circumference, while a single Indian step is only 0.6 to 1.3mm.
That matters. Being one Indian number off is a near miss that beads or a light adjustment can handle. One number off in the US system is a genuine resize.
| Inside circumference | India | US & Canada | UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| 51.9mm | 11 | 6 | L½ |
| 52.5mm | 12 | 6¼ | M |
| 53.8mm | 13 | 6¾ | N |
| 54.4mm | 14 | 7 | N½ |
| 55.7mm | 15 | 7½ | O½ |
When you are still unsure, buy for flexibility instead of precision
A ready-to-ship ring in a standard size protects you twice: it arrives faster, and because it has not been customised, it stays inside the 14-day return and exchange window under our return and exchange policy. A ring made to a specific size or personalised to your request is treated as a custom piece and is not returnable, so browse ready-to-ship designs if the size is still a question mark.
One warning that costs buyers real money: do not take the ring to a local jeweller for resizing. Alterations carried out by anyone else make the piece ineligible for return or exchange, and they can affect warranty cover too.
To confirm the size and design before ordering, book a virtual appointment, or move to a custom design once you have a confirmed measurement. Shortlist shapes from our engagement ring collection first, and see how elongated cuts sit on the finger in our diamond shapes guide.
If it does not fit on the proposal day
Do not force it past the knuckle, because a stuck ring on a swollen finger turns a good moment into a difficult one. If it is loose, let her wear it for the photographs, then keep it safe rather than wearing it out that evening. Say the fit is being finalised, which is completely normal, and book the adjustment. Once the size is confirmed, matching a wedding band is straightforward because both rings can be sized together.
Frequently asked questions
Q1. Can every engagement ring be resized?
No. Rings with a plain or partially set shank can usually be altered by about two sizes either way. Full eternity bands, and some channel-set and very wide designs, cannot be resized and must be remade.
Q2. Should I order a size up or a size down if I am guessing?
Slightly up is safer, because a tight ring cannot be worn at all while a loose one can be fitted with sizing beads. The exception is a prominent knuckle, where a larger size only spins more once it clears the joint.
Q3. How accurate is tracing her finger while she sleeps?
Rough. It places you within one to two sizes. Use it to pick a starting size for a resizable design, not to place a made-to-size order.
Q4. Does the ring size change after we buy it?
Finger size shifts with temperature, humidity, time of day and weight changes, often by up to half a size. Buy for her size today and treat later changes as a routine adjustment.
Q5. Will resizing affect my return or warranty rights?
Resizing or customisation makes the ring a made-to-order piece, which sits outside the 14-day return window. Alterations by a third-party jeweller make it ineligible for return or exchange altogether, so route any adjustment through us.
